The hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test measures the amount of blood sugar (glucose) attached to your hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the part of your red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. It is an important blood test that gives a good indication of how well your diabetes is being controlled.

Blood glucose tests measure the concentration of glucose molecules in the blood at a single point in time. The HbA1c test measures the proportion of haemoglobin molecules in the blood that have become chemically bonded with glucose over a period of up to 3 months.

About the Diabetes Health Check

HbA1c is a term for a type of hemoglobin in your blood that joins with sugar. When your body has trouble using sugar properly, more sugar sticks to your blood cells, and this can be measured by looking at your HbA1c levels. These blood cells live for about 2-3 months, so this test is usually done every three months.

If your HbA1c level is high, it means there’s too much sugar in your blood. This can increase your risk of problems with your eyes and feet, often seen in diabetes. Keeping track of your HbA1c level helps you avoid these serious issues. You should get this test at least once a year, but if your levels are high or need more monitoring, you might need the test every three to six months. It’s really important to keep up with these tests, so if it’s been over a year since your last one, you should get in touch with your healthcare team.
