How can the Ovarian Cancer health check help you?

Abstract Art Private Health Check London

One of the key markers we look at for assessing ovarian cancer is CA-125. This is a protein made by some ovarian cancers. It circulates in the blood, so it can be measured with a blood test.

High levels of CA-125 are often found in people who have ovarian cancer, however testing this alone is not completely reliable to detect ovarian cancer, because other medical conditions of the womb and ovaries can also raise the levels of CA125 such as:

  • endometriosis
  • fibroids
  • pelvic inflammatory disease
  • pregnancy

This is why combining with diagnostic imaging helps to give much more detailed insight and help identify or rule in/out other gynaecological health issues.

About the Ovarian Cancer Health Check

Ovarian cancer affects the ovaries and is is a growth of cells that forms in the ovaries. The cells multiply quickly and can invade and destroy healthy body tissue. Women have two ovaries, one on each side of the uterus. The ovaries are about the size of an almond and their role is to produce and store your eggs (also called ovum) and make hormones that control your menstrual cycle and pregnancy. During ovulation, one of your ovaries releases an egg. If a sperm fertilises this egg, you can become pregnant.

This health check encompasses the most common diagnostic tests you would typically have when investigating ovarian cancer including blood test – markers and ultrasound imaging. The combination of this is also great as imaging can help to look at number of things related to your ovaries including:

  • your ovaries are the right size
  • your ovaries look normal in texture
  • there are any cysts in your ovaries

This may also help pick up other concerns that may need addressing
